Read about the Fishermen and Merchants in 19th Century Gaspé, especially William Hyman and Sons.

Hyman’s shop was the last place Patrick Kaveney was seen alive. Read about traditional life in rural Québec, the role of women and children in the fishing industry .

“Shipwrecks, more frequent on the Gaspé north coast, were a significant source of income for Hyman — at least profitable enough to offset losses in a bad fishing season. Ships that ran aground were sold at auction by Lloyds Insurance, and two or three merchants would often get together and share the cargo.

In 1864 Hyman and the Blouin brothers from Rivière-au-Renard shared the profits from the sale of the cargo and rigging of two ships that ran aground at Cap-des-Rosiers.”
